 Baby Car Seats

All young children should be transported in car seats until they are large enough to be held properly by your car's seat belts. There are three types of car seats you can purchase, infant, toddler, and booster. Make sure the car seat you choose can support the weight of your child because there are many car seats available, all with different specifications.

Infant car seats should be placed in the middle of the back seat. This is considered to be the safest location in the event of an accident. Infant seats should also be rear facing because they provide the best support for your child's head and back during head-on or side collisions. Infant car seats come with two types of harnesses, 3-point and 5-point. The 3-point harnesses secure your child around the shoulders and between the legs while the 5-point harnesses secure your child's hips as well. Many infant car seats come with a detachable base that allows the car seat to be removed from the car gently, allowing sleeping children to stay asleep while being transported from the car to the house. Some detachable car seats even offer the versatility of attaching to strollers.

Toddler car seats are for when your child is too large to sit in a rear facing car seat but too small to be without a car seat. Instead of having to buy one car seat for when your child is an infant, and another when your child outgrows it, many car seat styles are convertible. This means that it converts from an infant seat to a child seat. Simply adjust the angle and turn it to face the front and voila.

Booster seats are ideal for children who are too large for car seats, but still too small to use the cars safety belt alone. These allow children to sit up a little higher and use the vehicle's existing safety belts allowing for a safe transition from car seat to adult safety belt.

Just about every child seat nowadays comes with tether straps, which are an alternative to using the vehicle's safety belts to secure the car seat. These straps are secured to the vehicle's anchor points. Car seats are still made to support use of existing vehicle's safety belts since many older cars do not have anchor points. Note: Most vehicles manufactured from the year 2000 and on are required by law to come with anchor points for tethers.
