Quilts
Baby quilts come in a very large variety of shapes, sizes, patterns, and fabrics. They can be custom-ordered to fit your preference and often are used as a wall hanging in a newborn's nursery before they are born. Since most baby quilts are pretty thick they aren't necessary until it's really cold out. You may want to put your baby in a sleeper and use a regular blanket to keep him or her warm at night.
Since quilts are generally pretty thick be careful that you do not cover your baby's face as this could lead to suffocation or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Some quilts, especially knitted quilts, have tassels on the ends with many strings. These aren't the best to use because your baby could rip these strings off and choke on them. Also, with knitted quilts you need to make sure they aren't loosely knitted because a small baby's fingers may get caught in it.
