Baby
Sign Language
Teaching your baby sign language is a great way to understand what is going on inside that little head before he or she can actually speak the words. At under a year old your child may lack the motor skills to be able to speak, but his or her hand muscles are developed enough to be able to sign. At an age as young as 6 months your child is old enough to use baby sign language and with the proper guidance from his or her parent or caregiver that child would be able to communicate with you and others.
Many people feel that it would be very difficult to teach their child sign language and don't realize that they may have already been doing it. Children even come up with their own signs to try and communicate; it's just a matter of whether or not we understand them. This is where teaching your child many basic words or phrases can come in handy. By teaching your child signs it can also take away the frustration levels associated with not understanding what your child wants and vice versa.
Children pick up sign language pretty easily. It may take a few weeks or so to get the first sign, but once the child catches on it can be a fun experience for both the child and the parent. Since no knowledge of sign language is required to teach your child any parent can do this. There are many books you can check out from your local library, purchase from a bookstore, or Internet sources to teach you all kinds of signs. Teaching your child sign language may also aid in your child's ability to understand spoken language better.
