 Pregnancy Nutrition

Your health is a very important thing to consider while pregnant. It is important to realize you are now living your life for you baby, not yourself. The unhealthy things you do will also affect your unborn child, and sometimes in much worse ways. You should quit smoking altogether, but if not forever at least for the duration of your pregnancy. Alcohol and any illegal drug use should be discontinued as well. If you take medications it is best to verify with your doctor the harmful effects, if any, that may occur. X-rays should be avoided as well.

You may hear very often "eat up, after all you're eating for two." Even though you are eating for two, the second person you are eating for is very tiny, so eating double is not necessary. More importantly, the nutritional value of the food you are eating is more of a concern than the quantity. During pregnancy your body will be able to absorb more nutrients than normal due to hormonal changes. If you are already on a healthy diet before you become pregnant high with nutrients you are on the right path for providing your baby with all the nutrients he or she will need to stay healthy. If not, there are simple changes to your diet to make to ensure you and your baby receive some important nutrients.

A multivitamin is very good for you because it will supply you with many of the vitamins you need for a healthy growing baby. Folic acid is one of the more important vitamins you can take while pregnant because it is known to help prevent brain and spine birth defects. Folic acid is found synthetically in pill form, or naturally in leafy greens, beans, or orange juice.

Along with added vitamins you will need to increase caloric intake. Many people think that since they are pregnant they can eat whatever they want. Junk food binges will add calories to your diet, but no nutrients. Eating more healthy foods full of nutrients is important because this will keep you healthy and promote healthiness in your growing baby. Snacks here and there are fine though, just not all the time. Don't worry about the extra weight either; your body will shed the pounds after your baby is born.
