Shaken
Baby Syndrome
Shaken baby syndrome occurs when an infant or young child is shaken in a vigorous manner. Doing so can cause brain damage, swelling of the brain, retinal bleeding, mental retardation, other physical damage, such as bruising or broken bones, and in some cases death. A small percentage of children with shaken baby syndrome go undiagnosed because they may show less serious symptoms.
Shaken baby syndrome can cause your child to vomit for no apparent reason, have seizures, go into a coma, have blood pool in their eyes, have problems breathing, have problems eating, become very irritable, and have a swelled head. If you suspect your child may have shaken baby syndrome it is very important to go to the hospital immediately and tell the doctor exactly what may have caused this. If a doctor knows exactly what happened to the child it will make the treatment better for the baby.
Many parents or caregivers of children get very frustrated and annoyed with a crying baby, especially when the child will not stop for anything. Children, especially infants, are going to cry. It's not going to always be easy to make the child stop crying, but there are many ways to try. Some of these ways include gently rocking the baby, taking the baby for a walk in a stroller, getting a friend or relative to help out with the baby, leave the baby in its crib alone for a little bit, staying close by of course, and giving the child a rattle or pacifier. Sometimes it may take a little longer to get the baby to stop crying, but shaking the baby will only make matters worse.
